Best Practice Educational Corporate Governance

This session will examine best practice not-for-profit educational corporate governance, which provides strategic direction, mentorship and accountability. Drawing from his leadership experience as a decorated Canadian and Australian naval officer and involvement in a number of Australian and international educational projects – including the innovative Northern Beaches Christian School, Luther Poier will discuss how a Board fulfills the invaluable role of keeping an organisation accountable to its educational purpose and relevant to its stakeholders.

Your Presenter: Luther Poier

Luther Poier is currently the Managing Director & Head of Venture Capital of the BlueChilli Group, and was an original partner/advisor at Koda Capital and Commonwealth Private Office. For more than 11 years, he served as a director and then Chairman of Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS), driving a major board renewal and professionalisation project. He was deeply involved in the school's strategic mission to lead the changing nature of 21st century education, leading the executive to drive substantive change across both physical and pedagogic environments.

Luther also chaired the NBCS Sydney Centre for Innovation in Learning (SCIL), which actively promoted excellence in education by providing new learning opportunities for students and future-focused professional development for teachers. Established as the NBCS research and innovation unit, SCIL ran a range of programs and research projects that sought to transform educational thinking and practice both at NBCS and in the wider educational community.

A decorated ex-Naval officer in both the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Luther brings deep involvement in the not-for-profit sector in art and education. Luther has been involved in education and technology from his early work in the RCN and RAN using simulation to teach navigation and war-fighting skills, after attaining a Master of Simulation. He is also a founding director of Artolution, a global NFP that operates around the world in distressed locations to ignite positive social change through collaborative art making and remains part of its Advisory Council. He is also a co-founder and strategic adviser to DICE Kids, an Australian education NFP that focusses on growing a digital, innovative, creative and entrepreneurial generations, and a strategic Board advisor to TokenOne, a global cybersecurity firm.

Luther also holds a BA (Philosophy) from Canada‘s Western University, and an MBA (with Distinction) from UNSW (AGSM), and is an active member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
