Building student job search capability

Teaching and Leadership Program: non-accredited training – building student resilience and employability

This virtual Zoom professional development event on two non-accredited/pre-accredited employability skills units for adult and community education (ACE) students, took place at 10.00am on Thursday 7 October 2021.

About this Session

Dr Jim Cloutman, Riverina Community College, introduced and workshopped two short training programs focussing on building student resilience and their capacity to find work. The training materials were developed in a project funded under the NSW Government’s 2020/21 ACE Teaching and Leadership Program, and support a focus on employability skills, as recommended in Dr Cloutman’s report, Supporting Pathways in Learning and Life.

The two products are:

  • Resiliency 1 – Dealing with job loss and searching for new roles. This training program starts with helping students to manage their feelings and expectations and goes on to explore flexible and consistent approaches to finding work.
  • Access the labour market 1: Going the extra mile. This training program focusses on targeting and refining resumes to suit specific roles and employer needs.

Trainer and student guides to support the delivery of these programs are available in the resources section below.

The session explored the intent, content and relevant approaches to delivery of the programs. The resources have been designed as part of a proposed suite of resources to help to provide consistency and quality for the delivery of employability skills courses in Australian ACE contexts. The ideal is that they be trialled within various college and settings, customised as required, improved and refined continuously over time, and kept as a common resource for the sector.

The session was chaired by Jo Martin, CEO of Central Coast Community College and a member of CCA’s Board of Directors.
