CCA has published its Engaging Indigenous Communities Guide, developed to assist CCA members to deliver culturally safe accredited and non-accredited training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities, by conducting effective and sustainable engagement.
The Guide (download a copy here) was prepared for CCA by the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre (AILC), with funding provided by the NSW Government.
“CCA thanks the AILC and its CEO, Robyn Forester, for its valuable assistance in preparing the Guide, and in conducting workshops with CCA members. We will continue to build on the Guide, and to assist our members to undertake Indigenous community engagement. CCA is pleased to publish the Guide now, to make it available to the whole Australian adult and community education (ACE) sector, as we believe many organisations will find it of value,” said Dr Don Perlgut, CEO of Community Colleges Australia.
“As NCVER figures show each year, the Australian ACE sector over-performs in its ability to reach and engage with Indigenous learners and communities, especially in relation to government-funded vocational education and training (VET). Our sector has a special role to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities; this Guide assists our members to fulfill that role,” said Dr Perlgut.
The Guide provides information and engagement techniques to enhance relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, through a step-by-step process. The process begins with building basic knowledge on the history and cultural aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and then builds to provide examples and strategies on how to create engagement through HR interventions, participation in community events and the development of strategic plans such as Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs).
