Community Colleges Australia (CCA) has opened nominations for its second annual Community Education Student of the Year Awards.
These Awards celebrate the achievements of Australia’s adult and community education students, based on career and study; communication, team and leadership skills; and community and other activities.
“Australia’s adult and community education providers teach many hundreds of thousands of students each year, from the smallest rural hamlets to the inner suburbs of our major cities. These national Awards acknowledge their accomplishments. Many of our sector’s students have used their study with a community education provider to overcome significant life challenges,” said Dr Don Perlgut, CEO of CCA.
The Awards will be presented at the CCA Annual Conference “Gala Dinner” on the evening of Wednesday 14 November 2018 at the Mercure Hotel in Sydney. The 2018 Awards are supported by the NSW Government.
The total prize "pool" for the winner and honourable mentions exceeds $2500. An independent panel will judge the nominations.
CCA invites nominations of students who have undertaken or are currently undertaking formal study with an Australian not-for-profit community education organisation during the period 1 July 2017 through 31 August 2018. Nominations for the Awards close on 31 August 2018, to be supplied by community education providers using the form provided on the CCA website.
CCA welcomes all nominations, not only from member institutions. There is no nomination fee and no age limit, although students must be Australian citizens or residents, and at least 18 years old by 31 August 2018. View the 2018 Award Terms and Conditions here (PDF document).
Shortlisted entrants will be notified as soon as possible after the closing date through their nominating organisation. They will be invited to attend the Awards at the Gala Dinner and provided a subsidy to attend the dinner.

The 2017 CCA Community Education Student of the Year winner was Jolie Kaja, Coffs Coast Community College (Coffs Harbour NSW), a refugee from Zambia and the Congo who studied Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care). She arrived in Australia speaking nine African languages plus French – but no English, and is now employed by an aged care provider. Highly Commended was Julia Chant, Byron Community College (Mullumbimby NSW), who studied Certificate IV in New Small Business, who started a new business that manufactures inexpensive, expandable, off grid optional dwellings.
