CCA Conference features Australian Honours Awards winners

The Community Colleges Australia (CCA) Brisbane conference in November will feature three recent recipients of the Order of Australia.

In the last 18 months, three CCA member CEOs have received the Medal in the Order of Australia (General Division) for their work in community education and other community service: Rodney Wangman OAM, Garry Traynor OAM and Patricia Carroll OAM.

The conference session in the afternoon of 19 November will feature the three engaged in a panel discussion about their professional lives and reflections on their decades of community service.

About session participants

Rodney Wangman OAM, CEO of Albury Wodonga Community College, received an OAM “for service to local government, and to the community of Albury Wodonga.” Rodney has been the CEO of Albury Wodonga Community College – which operates both in Victoria and New South Wales – since 2001, where he has developed the innovative 2Cool4School program. He is also a long-serving member of Wodonga (Victoria) City Council (2005-2016), including four years as Mayor.

Garry Traynor OAM, Founding Principal of Sydney Community College (SCC), received an OAM “for services to adult education”. Sydney Community College was previously known as Leichhardt-Marrickville Community College. Following Garry’s appointment as Principal in 1986, it became Sydney Community College under Garry’s leadership in 1988.

Patricia Carroll OAM, CEO of St George and Sutherland Community College (SGSCC), received her OAM for “service to education, and people with a disability.” SGSCC has guided students in southern Sydney for four decades and celebrated its 40 year anniversary earlier this year (2019). Now based in Jannali, the college had its early start from a small classroom at Caringbah High School with only 14 students with a disability in 1979.
